Detail
The Challenger 1 came into service in 1984. Although the gun control equipment was a little changed from that fitted to Chieftain, the tank had a new hull and included major automotive changes.
Improved suspension and the new 1200 bhp Rolls-Royce engine meant that the vehicle speed was improved dramatically whilst the new ‘Chobham’ armour improved protection levels considerably.
The tank saw service in the Gulf War with QRIH where it was up-armoured by addition of bolt on panels and the vehicle’s range was extended by the addition of externally mounted fuel tanks.
