Awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for praiseworthy and gallant services throughout the campaign. He also received the Turkish Medal. He was wounded on the right wrist by grapeshot and assisted Captain White of the 17th Lancers back to his Regiment after the Charge.

He died on the 29th of March 1918 in Edinburgh.

Lord Garnock was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the 8th Hussars on 16 November 1887, promoted to Lieutenant on 5 June 1889, and to Captain on 30 July 1894.

He served with the regiment in South Africa in 1901–1902 during the Second Boer War and was promoted to Major on 19 October 1901. The war ended in June 1902, and Lord Garnock stayed in South Africa until December of that year when he left on the SS Kinfauns Castle.

He later served with the East Riding of Yorkshire Yeomanry.

In a letter written on the 26th of October 1854, Lieutenant Seager says that Harding was unable to ride in the Charge because of a boil on his leg. Harding became Adjutant on the 26th of October 1854 and acted in that capacity until his death.

Indian Mutiny 1857-59. Awarded the Indian Mutiny medal – clasp: Central India. He served with great distinction in the Indian Mutiny and was mentioned in dispatches for distinguished conduct before Gwalior.

On the 19th of October 1858, whilst singlehandedly attacking a group of mutineers he fell mortally wounded. After being carried a great distance in a dhooly he finally died at Seronge.

Crimean War 1854-56. Awarded Crimean War medal. Clasps: Balaclava, Sevastopol; Asst-Surgeon with the 8th Hussars 15th August 1854 until 9th of February 1855.

He was awarded the Victoria Cross on the 25th of September 1857 at Lucknow for “noble conduct in defending the wounded”. He received the medal from Queen Victoria at Buckingham Palace on the 8th of June 1859. C.B. [1865], K.C.B. [1874].

He served in China in 1860, in New Zealand from 1863-65 and in the Ashanti War of 1873-1874.

He died on the 9th or 10th August 1914 in London.

James was born in 1879. He enlisted into the Army as a young man and married Florence Lee at Walthamstow on the 2nd of December 1915.

He had over twenty years’ service with the 8th (King’s Royal Irish) Hussars before moving to Welshpool with his wife prior to the war, where he had become Acting Regimental Sergeant Major to the Montgomeryshire Yeomanry, and was based at The Armoury, Welshpool.

On the 5th of August 1914 the Montgomeryshire Yeomanry was mobilised at Welshpool, as part of the South Wales Mounted Brigade, before moving via Hereford to Thetford to join the 1st Mounted Division.

James tool ill whilst based in Norfolk and was hospitalised in London, where he died on the 19th of September 1916, aged 39.
