Staff Sergeant Major Austin joined the 3rd Hussars in time to be with them during the closing stages of the Boer War.

At the outbreak of The Great War, he travelled to France  and served with them until 1920 earning the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. It was in the trenches that he earned his Military Medal.

Lt Col Walter Willcox described Squadron Sergeant-Major Austin’s situation at Bourlon Wood in November 1917:

The line taken over was found to be practically non-existent with regards trenches. A line of troop posts was rapidly dug, and the position made secure … A heavy enemy barrage was put down on all exits from the wood. Casualties were continuous and gas-masks were constantly to be worn.

On 27th of November 1917 SSM Austin was to be one of 31 members of the Regiment to be wounded on just that single day.

It was to be the end of his war but on recovery from his wounds he returned to serve with the Regiment as part of the Army of Occupation in Germany and later Turkey.

Barr, STLieutenantBiography

Samuel Tudor Barr was the son of Sir James and Lady Barr of Liverpool and was born there on the 2nd of May 1883.

He was educated at Liverpool college, and the R.M.C. Sandhurst.

Samuel received his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in January 1902 and after joining he served with his regiment in India and was promoted Lieutenant in June 1906.

In January 1909 while climbing with his father on the Alps he met with an accident and suffered from frost bite, losing all his toes.

However, on recovery he re-joined his Regiment in South Africa, but in 1910 found he was not fit for active service, joined the South Irish Horse, but finally left the Army in 1912. He did not remain on the Reserve of Officers, and therefore was under no obligation for further service.

When war broke out he was in Rhodesia, and was so anxious to serve that he travelled at his own expense 10,000 miles and on the day of his arrival in England offered his service to the War Office: he was at once gazetted as Lieutenant and was attached to his old Regiment.

He was extremely eager to go to the front, and when while he was in the reserve at Rouen, the 20th Hussars had many casualties among their officers he immediately volunteered his services.

It was while doing temporary duty with this Regiment that he was killed on the 23rd of February 1915.

Brooks, CRPLieutenantBiography

The Great War 1914-18. Lieutenant Colin Robert Percy Brooks was not awarded the 1914-15 Star which means that he was probably  one of those young men who joined the army straight from Public school as soon as he reached the age of 18 and a half.

After passing the rudimentary medical tests he would have taken the oath of allegiance.

He would then have attended one of the many Officer Training Camps for four and a half months and  completed additional training in horsemanship before joining the Regiment in France.

Lieutenant Brooks was then attached to the 4th Machine Gun Squadron.

During the attack on Rifle Wood the Vickers Guns of the 4th Machine  Gun Squadron performed great feats of valour in getting into action. They took a heavy toll of Germans.

The design of the Vickers machine gun was such that the gunners were not able to fire from behind cover. Lieutenant Brooks, died from his wounds on the 2nd of April, sustained during the attack made on the 1st of April 1918, aged just 22.

He was awarded the Military Cross for his gallantry.

His citation reads as follows:

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty.

He pushed his guns out in front of the line held and kept them in action under very heavy machine-gun fire, although short of ammunition, only ceasing when he became aware that the troops behind him had withdrawn.

By his cheerfulness under all circumstances and absolute disregard of danger, he set a magnificent example to his men.

Bush, E3835PrivateBiography

As early as August 1914, the opening month of the war, Private Edgar Bush, serving with the 3rd (King’s Own) Hussars became the first man to be decorated.

In recognition of his actions during the British withdrawal after the Battle of Mons, he was awarded a Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM), the highest award for gallantry after the Victoria Cross.

Edgar was the son of Mr & Mrs Timothy Bush who lived in Willow Vale, the area of the town running alongside the River Frome and which had experienced some of the worst of the flooding at the end of December 1914. He joined the Regiment seven years previously and when war broke out the Regiment was stationed in Shorncliffe Kent.

The 3rd Hussars deployed to France on 17th August 1914, as part of the British Expeditionary Force, and took part in the Battle of Mons. It was after the battle that Private Bush performed his act of Heroism for which he was decorated.

The citation reads:

For gallantry and coolness displayed at Longueuil on 13th August 1914, when on patrol duty he successfully ambushed ten German cavalrymen.

Edgar along with a comrade had become parted from their Squadron when they saw a nearby German Patrol. They hid in straw sacks as the Patrol passed and then rushed to inform the remainder of his Squadron. Edgar’s quick thinking and placing of his Troop into ambush positions forward of the enemy ensured all 10 Uhlans were killed when he initiated the ambush.

In May 1915, after receiving notification he was to be awarded the medal, he wrote to his parents at Willow Vale to tell them the news, “ You will be pleased to hear I have been awarded the DCM, I think it is a big honour, don’t you.

On the same day his parents received his letter he sat down and wrote another to his brother: “I don’t think I told you, did I that I have got the DMC?

I was rather surprised when I heard of it, but the Captain told me if anyone deserved it, I did. So I guess I earned it somewhere.” Also in this letter a reference to a deadly new weapon introduced at Ypres.

We thought we were going to catch it on Sunday when the Germans started using gas, but it did not quite reach us, and our Infantry did not half pay when they started to come out. However, we scraped through once more.
