Petherick, JCColonelBiography

Colonel John Cecil Petherick, who died on the 24th of May 1981 at the age of 92, was the last surviving 3rd Hussar officer of those who, with the Regiment, went to France on the 14th of August 1914 and were present at the Battle of Mons, the Retreat from Mons, the Battle of the Marne and the Battle of the Aisne.

Born on the 21st of January 1889, he was educated at Marlborough and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he got a 2nd class BA degree in Mediaeval and Modern French and was first in order of merit in Military subjects. Commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 3rd Hussars early in 1912 (with seniority from the 3rd of February 1911), he joined the Regiment at Shorncliffe where he was stationed until going to the War.

He was wounded on the 17th of September 1914 in the Battle of the Aisne but on recovering returned to the Regiment with which he remained until early 1916 when in the rank of Captain he was appointed to command the 4th Cavalry Brigade Machine Gun Squadron, an appointment which he filled until the end of the War and after, finally in the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

His service throughout the War in France was recognised by the award of the Italian Silver Medal for Valour (1917), the Military Cross (1918) and a Mention in Dispatches.

Early in 1919, he returned to Shorncliffe with his machine gunners and there remained until posted back to Regimental duty in early 1921.

On the 21st of July 1921, he married the Hon. Bridget Cornwallis, the youngest daughter of the 1st Baron Cornwallis, and by her had one son (deceased) and two daughters.

Three months after his wedding, he was sent with the Regiment to Constantinople and late in August 1922 he was in command of ‘B’ Squadron at Chanak, the only British troops on the Asian side of the Dardanelles.

It was largely due to his tactful but firm handling of the situation when grossly provoked and insulted by the Turkish forces of Mustapha Kemal that an outbreak of hostilities was avoided.

Returning to England in 1923, he spent two years at the Cavalry Depot at Canterbury followed by four years at Doncaster as Adjutant of the Queen’s Own Yorkshire Dragoons. He retired from the Army in the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1929 and in 1930 bought Hextall Court, Peckham Bush, Nr Tonbridge, his home from then on.

Early in his service with the Regiment, he was allotted a Government charger called Chough and in 1913 he bought a private charger in Ireland which he called Tregeagle. Both these horses carried him throughout the 1914 War and were never “sick or sorry”.

On Chough, too, he won two (including one open) point-to-point races before the War and the Regimental race at Arborfield and another point-to-point race in 1920 and one wonders whether these racing successes with four years of War on active service abroad separating them may not well be a unique record. Tregeagle, too, after four years of War, was still good enough to win three point-to-point races in 1922, including Earl Beatty’s Cup at Arborfield, but at the time was sent to The Hon Stanley Cornwallis and ridden by Joe Dudgeon,

In the 1939-45 War, Colonel Petherick was for a year a Group Commander of the LDV (later Home Guard) in Kent but then was posted to Civil Affairs/Military Government with which he served in the UK and France, Belgium and Holland, From 1952 to 1956 he was Sector Commander of the West Kent Home Guard.

Throughout his life a staunch Conservative, Colonel Petherick was Chairman of the Maidstone Division Conservative Association for 20 years from 1933, President for a further 7 years and from 1960 Vice-President for life.

In 1953, he was awarded the OBE for these and many other public services in the County of Kent.
Petherick, WG Lieutenant ColonelBiography

All old 3rd Hussars will have been saddened to hear of the death of Col Billy Petherick on the 22nd of August 1988. He was buried two days later on his ninetieth birthday privately and, at his request, no Memorial Service is to be held.

He joined the 3rd Hussars in France in 1917 and saw action immediately. He left the Army in 1947 having enjoyed a career mainly at regimental duty, serving in Turkey, Egypt, India and England between the two world wars. In the early part of 1940, he took over command and sent part of the regiment to the short-lived campaign in Norway.

He then took the regiment to the Middle East taking part in the victorious campaign against the Italians culminating in the victory at Beda Fomm. He gave up the command after the retreat from Cyrenaica with half the regiment in Tobruk and the remainder in the Nile Delta.

One Old Comrade has written in to mention Col Bill’s deep profound interest and feelings for the men he commanded.

Perhaps what he means is in some way summed up by Roy Farran, then one of his Troop Leaders, in his book Winged Dagger. The scene was on the retreat to Tobruk, Col Billy was sitting on top of his Mk VI B Light tank. The sun was hot and no one had received a water ration for two days, Farran lay beside the tank whilst his Squadron Leader discussed the situation. The Colonel leant down with his water bottle outstretched towards Farran.

Farran says “Unthinkingly I took speedy gulps before I realised what the Colonel had done. There was no more water to be had and yet he, who must have been as thirsty as I was, had given me his last reserve, such little things lead men to die for another“.

After the war, Colonel Billy retired to his beloved Cornwall but never lost his interest in the regiment. He attended reunions regularly for many years. He was one of those who took part in the first OCA visit to Lubeck in 1949 for the unveiling and dedication of the war memorial. At least one post-war commanding officer was grateful for his interest and advice over Regimental affairs.

His interest continued after the amalgamation, Uniquely, perhaps, he had three godsons who all served in the regiment at the same time, perhaps this could be taken as some measure of the affection and respect of his brother officers since they were all sons of his contemporaries! His final visit to the regiment was at Catterick for the Tercentenary Celebrations.

He brought with him some of the fronds of a New Zealand fern grown in his garden in Cornwall which was incorporated in the floral decorations in the lunch marquee. He was, also, extremely proud to be asked to present Old Comrades to HRH Princess Margaret.

Colonel Billy lived his life as a gentleman, in the best sense of the word, There are still many who will mourn his passing and gain inspiration from his life.

Piper, JH4344PrivateBiography

Private JH Piper served with the 3rd Kings Own Hussars during the Boer War.

The Regiment sailed from India and arrived at Durban in December 1901. After being stationed in the Newcastle district for a short time, they and the 20th Hussars were brigaded under Colonel Nixon and were employed in the last great drives, chiefly in the extreme northeast of the Orange River Colony, when many of the enemy were taken.

This column was responsible for many of these captures, and in Lord Kitchener’s dispatch of 8th April 1902 he mentioned that ‘Colonel Nixon reported the discovery of three Krupp field guns which were found hidden in the bed of a tributary of Liebensberg’s Vlei‘.

Dealing with an earlier drive, Lord Kitchener stated that Colonel Nixon had on the night of the 26th February 1902 ‘successfully repulsed an attack by a large number of the enemy upon the line of the Cornelius River‘.

During the Second Boer War, the British forces entered the territory of the Orange Free State and occupied the capital Bloemfontein on the 13th of March 1900.

Five months later, on the 6th of October 1900, the British government declared an official annexation of the full territory of the Orange Free State, despite the fact that the British had not yet occupied the full territory of the state, nor defeated the Free State forces.

Following the end of the war in South Africa, 507 officers and men of the regiment returned to India on the SS Ionian in October 1902, where they were stationed in Sialkot in Punjab Province.

SSM Piper went on 12 years later to serve in the Reserve Regiment of Cavalry during the First World War.

His long and faultless service earned him the Long Service Good Conduct Medal.

Smith, H4415Regimental Sergeant MajorBiography

Private Smith enlisted in 1900 in the 18th Hussars and served with them in South Africa during the Second Boer War.

At the outbreak of The Great War he transferred to the 3rd Kings Own Hussars.

On the 20th of September as a Staff Sergeant Major he was wounded and was entitled to wear a “Wound Stripe”.

After a long break over the winter of 1914-15, the regiment was involved in this second German attempt to crush the salient at Ypres. The opening assault on the 22nd of April was preceded by the first-ever use of gas in warfare, which was to become a common feature in the Battle.

The 3rd Hussars was brought into the line at Wieltje near St Julien on the 23rd of April but it wasn’t until the 2nd of May that they made their mark. The infantry to their front broke under a Chlorine gas attack and the 2nd Cavalry Division was ordered to advance to hold their positions, which they managed.

On the 24th of May they found themselves in a hellish position at Hooge in front of Bellewaerde Ridge, but fortunately, the expected assault never happened.

The Germans abandoned their second attempt to crack Ypres.

The war now deployed into trench warfare with the regiment employed around Ypres, St Julien and Bellewaerde lake until put into reserve in June 1915.

For the summer the cavalry spent much time digging trenches, waiting for “the gap” then put into winter quarters, emerging in March 1916.

Regimental Sergeant Major Smith was awarded the Distinguished Conduct medal for his actions at Ypres.

His citation reads as follows:

‘For conspicuous gallantry and resource. During an enemy attack, a large number of men of other units were retiring past our trenches. Regimental Sergeant Major Smith, on his own initiative, left the trenches, under heavy shell fire, and by force of example stopped the retirement.

He also repeatedly went out, under heavy shell fire, and brought in the wounded men to medical treatment in the trenches. his bravery, energy and example during the month were worthy of the highest praise.’

In 1919 he was presented with his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. He left the 3rd Hussars in 1920.
