| Lay, J | Captain | Biography James William Lay was baptised on the 28th of August 1829 in Woodstock, Oxfordshire. He enlisted on the 6th of March 1846 into the 4th Queens Own Light Dragoons. After three years, on the 22nd of June he was promoted to Corporal but on the 9th of October 1851 he reverted to Private ‘at his own request’ for reasons unknown. He went to the Crimea in September 1854 and was sent to the General Depot at Scutari on the 18th of September and he re-joined the regiment on the 4th of October 1854. He served with the regiment throughout the Eastern campaign and was in the battles of Balaklava, Inkerman and Tchernaya and the siege and fall of Sebastopol. He was awarded the Crimean War medal with clasps for Balaclava, Inkerman, and Sevastopol and also the Turkish medal. On the 5th of December 1855 he was promoted to Corporal. The regiment spent a year at Brighton on their return from the Crimea in May 1856 and during this year he was promoted to Sergeant. In 1857 the regiment moved to Aldershot and on the 1st of May he was appointed Troop Sergeant Major. The regiment then went to Birmingham, Coventry, Nottingham and Manchester before spending five years in Ireland from 1860. On the 7th of November 1865 James was promoted to Cornet while stationed in Edinburgh. He was also appointed as Regimental Adjutant at this time. From 1865 until 1867 the Regiment was in Edinburgh. On the 15th of October 1867 set sail for India, arriving in November 1867. On the 23rd of December 1868 he was promoted to Lieutenant and he continued as Adjutant. James was promoted to Captain on the 4th of November 1874 in Rawalpindi and he relinquished his post as Adjutant. Three years after his promotion Captain James Lay died of consumption on the 16th of December 1877 in Rawalpindi aged 48. | |

Mayow served as Brigade-Major in the affairs of Bulgansk and Mackenzie’s Farm and the battles of the Alma, Balaclava and Inkerman. From 20th December 1854 until placed on half-pay he was Assistant Quartermaster-General of the Cavalry Division. In Kinglake’s account of the Charge, he relates how Mayow rallied some survivors of the 17th Lancers, who were led by Sergeant O’Hara. After O’Hara moved off to his left front, Mayow led the men, about fifteen in number, against a body of Russian cavalry in the rear of the guns. He pushed on to some 500 yards in the rear of the Russian battery and met a squadron of the 8th Hussars under Colonel Shewell. The latter took command and extricated the combined force of some seventy men from amongst the enemy. | |
