| Parkes, S | 635 | Private | Biography Described as a labourer, Samuel Parkes enlisted in the 4th Queens Own Light Dragoons on 30 July 1831 and was discharged on 1 December 1857 with four good conduct badges, as an out-pensioner of Chelsea Hospital. He served 11 years with the 4th Light Dragoons in India, including the First Afghan War (Ghuznee Medal), and in the Crimean War. Peacetime service with the 4th saw Parkes in Wales and Ireland as well as in England. At Balaklava, he was serving as an orderly to the regimental commanding officer, Colonel Lord George Paget. It was in this famous charge that Private Samuel Parkes of the regiment won his Victoria Cross. It was the twenty-second Victoria Cross awarded. The citation published in the London Gazette of 24th February 1857, gives Crawford the rank of Trumpet-Major, the rank he then held. At the time of the charge, Crawford was the Colonel’s trumpeter. While not detracting from Samuel Parkes’ valour in the charge, it should be remembered that the early awards of the V.C. were often made, not for the specific valour of the soldier, but because he was selected by his comrades. Parkes’ Victoria Cross may be considered as a representative award. The Colonel’s “Rollicking Orderly,” Samuel Parkes, was among the missing. After the charge on the Russian Lancers, Crawford’s horse collapsed from exhaustion and soon afterwards Parkes’ horse was shot. Parkes began to make his way back on foot when he saw Crawford, who had lost his sword in his fall, about to be attacked by two mounted Cossacks. Parkes at once ran to Crawford, stood in front of him, fought back against the two Cossacks and drove them off. The two men then started to run up the valley and were joined by Private John Edden, also of the 4th, whose horse had been shot. Soon they came across Major Halkett, lying seriously wounded. They were preparing to pick Halkett up when some Cossacks began to ride towards them. Halkett told the men to put him down and save themselves, but to put his sword into his hand before they went. Parkes turned and faced the Cossacks, whilst the other two tried again to lift Halkett. A Russian officer rode up and said to Parkes in English, “Give yourself up, and you won’t be hurt.” Parkes refused and one of the Russians fired his pistol and wounded Parkes in the right hand. The three of them began to run off. Edden got away but Parkes and Crawford were caught. As they were being taken back they saw that Halkett had died. Both men returned to the regiment exactly twelve months later, by exchange of prisoners. On 24th February 1857, he was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions, and he proudly received the medal from Queen Victoria at Hyde Park on 26th June 1857. Parkes and Crawford were held as Russian prisoners until 26 October 1855 – which makes Parkes the very first prisoner of war VC. View his Medal Group. Samuel Parkes died on the 14th of November 1864. |

| Sherston, JRV | Brigadier | Biography John Reginald Vivien Sherston was educated at Wellington and commissioned from the RMC into The Rifle Brigade. After a short period, he transferred into Probyn’s Horse (Indian Army) from where he was later seconded to the Viceroy’s Bodyguard. He saw active service in France in the First World War with the 4th Hussars being awarded the DSO, MC, Croix de Guerre (with Palm) and the Order of Leopold II. He was proud of the fact that he had been on duty at two Coronations, being one of the Indian Army contingents at George V’s when he was mounted outside Buckingham Palace dressed in the gorgeous uniform of Probyn’s Horse which he later gave to the Indian Army Museum. In India, he had been a keen polo player and a great horseman and in fact, he twice won the Kadir Cup. At the outbreak of World War II, as a Reservist, he was immediately re-employed as a GSOI at Army HQ in New Zealand but found the job too stifling for his active nature. He applied for a transfer back to the Indian Army and although the NZ Army were prepared to let him go neither would pay his fare. It was typical of him that having decided what to do he let nothing stand in his way and worked his passage at the age of 52 from NZ to India. After a short time in Delhi, he was transferred to the Middle East where he became Senior Liaison Officer, Allied Armies in the rank of Brigadier. He was made OBE for this work and eventually returned to Gloucestershire. | |

During the attack, when the regiment went forward to replace retiring infantry, with no information about the enemy being forthcoming, Sgt Siddons made his way through very heavy shell fire, gas and retiring infantry up to the first-line trenches, returning with most valuable information as to what was happening in the first line. He was transferred to the 10th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment on commission on the 10th of May 1918. |
| Siddons, W | 8556 | Sergeant | Biography The Great War 1914-18. On the 10th of September at Gandelu, the 4th Hussars was fortunate in being present at a fight in which 1,000 Germans were captured. It also captured a German pay wagon together with a number of good maps. The whole German line was driven across the River Marne and fell back to the River Aisne where it entrenched itself. On several occasions, the cavalry tried to cross the bridge at Conde, but on each occasion, the Germans were able to bring a very effective concentrated fire in the attackers which compelled them to withdraw. In these operations, the regiment took its full share. When conditions on the River Aisne came to a standstill both commanders of the opposing forces looked to their western flanks to see if they could get around their enemy. The Germans were bent on reaching the Channel ports and in order to counteract this move the British force was moved from its position on the Aisne in a northerly direction, finally coming to rest about Ypres. When in the Hollebeke area (south-east of Ypres) the regiment had to act very much on its own owing to the confused conditions which prevailed. The Germans’ attack did not reach the English Channel, but it gained a lot of ground, in the doing of which both sides had considerable casualties, the 4th Hussars losing many valuable officers and men. Sgt Siddons was awarded the Distinguished Contact medal during this time, his citation reads as follows: ‘For gallant conduct in the defence of the canal bridge near Hollebeke on 31st October when he carried messages under heavy fire, making a useful reconnaissance en route. Was also brought to notice for good patrol leading on 1st November.’ Sgt Siddons was also awarded a Bar to his DCM, the citation for which is as follows: ‘For conspicuous good service. Sgt Siddons and Pte Shaw volunteered for and successfully carried out two daring reconnaissance’s of the enemy’s trenches. They advanced with great skill to within 8 yards of the enemy.’ He transferred to 10th Battalion, The Welsh Regiment on commission on the 12th of March 1916. |

| Smith, AC | 2373 | Private | Biography In 1916 the 4th Queen’s Own Hussars were in France. But not all of them. Among the ranks of a cavalry training squadron on the Curragh was Pte Arthur Charles Smith of the Regiment. In Dublin, on the 24th of April, the Easter Rising, proclaiming the end of British rule, began and continued until, six days later, the rebels, by now surrounded by up to 10,000 British troops and at least one thousand armed members of the Royal Irish Constabulary, surrendered. Among those deployed from the Curragh was Arthur Smith and on the last day of fighting, on 29 April, he was shot and died close to Trinity College. He was buried temporarily beside the cricket pavilion in the College and later re-interred in the Grange Gorman cemetery. The Officers Training Corps at Trinity erected a plaque in his memory on a wall above his original burial place. Little is known of Arthur Smith, his name is not recorded in the regimental history of the 4th Hussars and his family has proved untraceable. |
