Fraser, CCCaptainBiography

Charles Fraser was the son of Sir James John Fraser who had commanded the 7th Hussars from 1826 to 1833 and who had shown great bravery in the Peninsular War and fought at Waterloo.

Whilst the 7th Hussars were in India during the Mutiny, they fought at Nawabgunge on 11th June where Major Charles Fraser was wounded.

On 31st Dec 1858, the 7th caught up with some rebels at the Raptee River but three men of the regiment were trapped on an island in the middle of the river and were in danger of being swept away as none of them could swim. Fraser, although still disabled from his wound swam to them and saved them. This was done with great difficulty and whilst under fire from the other bank.

He was gazetted for the award of the Victoria Cross on 8th Nov 1860.

Charles Crauford Fraser was born on 31st Aug 1829 and joined the 7th Hussars as a cornet on 3rd Dec 1847. He was a brevet major at the time of his brave deed but was a full major in July 1859. He exchanged to the 11th Hussars on 16th Aug 1859 and was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel on 18th Jan 1861.

The photo shows him in the uniform of a full Colonel of the 11th Hussars, with his VC medal just below his collar. He commanded the 11th from 1861 to 1873, during which time he was promoted to brevet colonel (18th Jan 1866). He served in the Abyssinian Campaign of 1867 and acted as ADC to the Duke of Cambridge from 1873 to 1877.

He was appointed Inspector General of Cavalry in Ireland 1880-84 and was Colonel of the 8th Hussars in 1886 until his death. He reached the rank of Lieutenant-General and was made a KCB in 1891.

He was MP for North Lambeth 1885-92. He died in Sloane Street on 7th June 1895.

Haig, DMajorBiography

Douglas Haig was the son of the Scottish distiller of Haig’s Whisky. He was an ambitious officer who was often critical of his senior officers, especially Kitchener, Lord Roberts and Sir John French. His first experience of action was at Atbara in the Sudan while he was serving as an officer in the Egyptian Army.

He was commissioned into 7th Hussars and soon singled out as exceptionally able. He served in 1898 at Omdurman. Between 1899-1900 he served as Chief of Staff to French.

He acted as a column commander against the rebels in Cape Colony from 1900-1902. In the Boer War he at one time commanded a column of 2,500 men but had several staff posts.

He became the youngest major-general in the British Army in 1904 and by the beginning of the First World War he was second in command under French.

He became the Commander-in-Chief in December 1915 and is generally regarded as being responsible for the horrendous casualties sustained in the battle of the Somme and subsequent large-scale battles.

He was created Earl Haig in 1919 but died of a heart attack at the relatively early age of 66. He was given a state Funeral on 3rd Feb 1928.

In 1921 he founded the Royal British Legion to assist ex-servicemen.

Holford, JHESecond LieutenantBiography

James Henry Edward Holford was born in December 1873, and gazetted to the 7th Hussars on 7 March 1894, taking part in the operations in South Africa in 1896.

He became Lieutenant in May 1898, and next served, as Captain, in the operations in Ashanti, where he was appointed D.A.A.G. to the Ashanti Field Force and given command of a column in the mopping-up operations in the North and North-West of the country in September 1900. For his services, he was mentioned in despatches and awarded the D.S.O.

He became Adjutant of the Denbigh Hussars, Imperial Yeomanry, on 3 January 1902, and retired in 1905.

On the outbreak of the Great War, he was appointed Major in the Nottinghamshire Hussars, and later commanded the 12th (Service) Battalion, Durham Light Infantry, in Italy. For his services in Italy, he was three times mentioned, created a C.M.G., and awarded a clasp to his D.S.O. and the Italian silver medal for bravery.

Approximately 35 officers with pre-war D.S.O.s subsequently won a Bar in the Great War. C. M. G. London Gazette 1 January 1919, ‘For Military Operations in Italy. ‘D S.O. London Gazette 15 January 1901, ‘In recognition of services during the recent operations in Ashanti.’ The insignia were presented by the King at St. James’s Palace on 12 March 1901.

Bar to D.S.O. London Gazette 1 February 1919: ‘Major (Temporary Lieutenant-Colonel), Nottinghamshire Yeomanry, attached 12th Btn. Durham Light Infantry (Italy). For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in command of a battalion during the operations on the Piave from 27 to 30 Oct. 1918. Under heavy machine-gun fire he frequently reorganised his battalion and led them forward to their next objective, showing a total disregard for his own safety.

His courage and able leadership were most marked. ‘M. I. D. London Gazette 4 December 1900; 30 May 1918; 6 January and 5 June 1919.

Imbert-Terry, AFALieutenantBiography

Alexander Frederick Aime Imbert-Terry was born on 20th Feb 1874 and attended the Royal Military College at Sandhurst.

He was commissioned into the 7th Hussars on 21st Oct 1893 and promoted to Lieutenant on 6th July 1896 while he was serving in Matabeleland with the regiment.

The regimental history tells us that on the 11th of June, his second charger was found to be suffering from glanders and had to be destroyed.

He served in Baden-Powell’s column in that campaign and in November 1896 he commanded a Troop which destroyed several Kraals. He was promoted to Captain on 30th Dec 1899.

The regiment was split in two in 1901 with half going out to South Africa and the other half remaining in the UK. Albert was with the squadrons that remained in Britain.

He served with the 2nd Provisional Regiment of Hussars in 1902. In 1903 he married Agatha Hardy.

Albert resigned from the Army on 20th April 1907, but on 22nd May was on the Reserve of Officers. He died on the 24th of September 1964 aged 90.

Jones, RCColonelBiography

Robert Clifford Jones was born in 1890 and joined the 7th Hussars at Norwich in 1906.

He served with the Regiment for the next 10 years, and was, in 1916, Machine Gun Corporal of “A” Sqn” then commanded by Capt T. A. Thornton, with whom he had been on the square as a recruit.

When the Regiment went to Mesopotamia in the following year, Jones was posted to the Machine Gun School, Abbottabad, as an instructor, and was commissioned into the Machine Gun Corps a year later.

He returned to the Regiment in 1920, and soon afterwards became Quartermaster on the death of his predecessor. This appointment he held for 14 years, serving in Mhow, Edinburgh, Tidworth, Colchester, Aldershot and Hounslow.

In 1934 he left, with the rank of Major, and became Adjutant and Quartermaster of the Royal Military School of Music, and was promoted to Lt Col in 1939.

During the late war he became Camp Commandant, Headquarters, 21st Army Group, and for his services was twice Mentioned in Dispatches, and awarded the O.B.E.

He retired in 1946 with the rank of Colonel, and lived, first of all in London, and later in Brighton, where he died suddenly in September 1961.
