St. Quintin, TAColonelBiography

Colonel St. Quintin was gazetted to Cornet on the 30th of December 1859, promoted Lieutenant, by purchase, on the 16th of January 1863, and obtained his troop, by purchase, on the 17th of August 1870. On the 22nd November 1879, he received a Brevet Majority, for conspicuous services in the Afghan War, and became a Regimental Major, on the increase of the establishment of that rank, on the 1st July 1881. On the 1st of April 1886, he was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel and became the Second-in-Command.

A few months later, on the 2nd August 1886, he exchanged into the 2nd Dragoon Guards. From the time he received his first commission in the Tenth, he served continuously with the Regiment until 1882 when he was appointed re-mount agent in Calcutta. He relinquished that appointment in 1887, and in July of that year; he was selected to command the 8th Hussars.

His total service in The Tenth was 26 years, 225 days. With the Regiment, he took part in the Afghan War, 1878-79, commanding “D” Troop throughout the first phase of the campaign, was present at the assault and taking of Fort Ali Masjid, and at the actions at Fatehabad, where he acted on the staff of Brigadier-General C. Gough C. B. V.C.

He was mentioned in despatches, received a Brevet Majority, and was awarded the medal for the campaign with the clasp Ali Masjid.

Possessing every qualification necessary to make an ideal Cavalry Officer, and a knowledge of horses which could not be surpassed, Colonel St Quintin, from the first days of his service, was accorded a reputation as a soldier and a sportsman, which he merited and maintained to the end of his active soldiering days.

Tomblings, ELieutenant ColonelBiography

Lieutenant Colonel Edward Tomblings joined the 8th King’s Royal Irish Hussars in 1878 as a 2nd Lieutenant in time to see service in the 2nd Afghan War. The 8th formed part of the Khyber Line Force tasked with keeping open lines of communication.

A challenging campaign  against the local Afghan tribesmen who harried them from the heights with their long jezail muskets.

He was in action again during the Boer War. The 8th received orders to mobilise on the 26th of December 1899. On arrival in South Africa Captain and Riding Master Tomblings was specially asked for by Field Marshall Lord Roberts for employment with the re-mount Department.

The supply of suitable cavalry horses was particularly difficult in South Africa.

The Boers quickly reduced the number of available horses by their accurate rifle and artillery fire. 360,000 horses and 106,000 mules and donkeys had to be shipped into South Africa from England or Australia.

The long sea voyage played havoc with their condition, and they were susceptible to the harsh desert conditions and disease. Those that did survive were often hard used by inexperienced troops and some Generals did not seem to understand that a horse needs water, fodder and care if it is to be effective.

The average life expectancy of a British horse, from the time of its arrival in Port Elizabeth, was around six weeks.

Edward Tomblings was charged with solving the problem.

He went on to carry out a similar role during the Great War where the need was even greater.

He started as Riding Master for the 8th Hussars, but his talents went on to serve the whole British Cavalry.
