Worsdell, FW—–Lance CorporalBiography

Frank Worsdell joined the 8th Hussars in 1915 and fought with them in the trenches.

In 1916 he joined the Cavalry Machine Gun Corps as a part of a draft of 8th Hussars machine gunners who joined the newly created 2nd Indian Cavalry Division MGC.

The Cavalry needed  machine gun Squadrons which were mobile enough to keep up with them on horseback.

A MGC (Cavalry) Squadron consisted of 8 officers and 203 other ranks, equipped with 299 horses, 18 ammunition limbers, 1 general supply wagon and 1 water cart.

Frank was awarded The Military Medal whilst as a Lance Corporal serving with the Cavalry Machine Gun Corps.

The machine guns were deadly in both attack and defence as they were able to throw down an impenetrable barrage of bullets.

Inevitably this attracted the attention of the German artillery and during the war the Machine Gun Corps suffered over 62000 casualties.

The very mobility of the cavalry units meant that the machine guns were frequently positioned in the open rather than in prepared defensive positions and this made them vulnerable.

The courage needed to serve the guns in the face of known artillery counter barrage was immense.

After the First War Frank continued in the Army transferring again, this time to the 4th Hussars.

WO2 FW Worsdell was awarded the Long Service and Good Conduct medal on the 8th of December 1932.
