Churchill. The Greatest Hussar
The Museum aims to tell the story of Churchill as a fighting soldier in India, the Sudan and South Africa as well as his close links to the Regiment throughout his lifetime.
Pith Helmet.
Foreign Service Helmet, 1876-1902 pattern, as used by Winston Churchill in South Africa.
The Pith helmet, also known as the safari helmet, is a lightweight cloth-covered helmet made of sholapith.
Pith helmets were often worn by European travellers and explorers, in the varying climates found in Africa, Southeast Asia, and the tropics, but have also been used in many other contexts.
They were routinely issued to European military personnel serving overseas “in hot climates” from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century.
Telescope and Leather case.
Telescope and Leather case inscribed Winston S. Churchill, 4th Queen’s Own Hussars.
Polo Cup.
Wintson Churchill was part of the 4th Hussars team that won the Inter Regimental Polo Cup in 1895.
The Regiment has the nickname “Churchill’s Own” as the young Churchill joined the 4th Hussars in 1895 and was later Regimental Colonel from 1941 to 1965.
