Army of Occupation
For the next five years the 8th Hussars had several homes moving first to Itzehoe in Schleswig Holstein, then a short time in Moll in Belgium where they converted to the new Comet tanks, and hence back to Itzehoe.
On 15th August 1945 came news of the unconditional surrender of Japan which brought the war truly to an end.

On July 7th Armoured Division moved to take over responsibility for an area in the west of the occupied zone about the size of Wales from the Polish forces, and the 8th Hussars found themselves in Lingen-am-Ems where they had once before been stationed in 1795.
Here they were responsible for internal security. For nearly two years they kept a firm grip on their area at the end of which time they had carried out over one hundred search operations, unearthed caches of arms and ammunition, illicit stills and stocks of food and discouraged lawbreaking generally.
After years abroad the 8th Hussars returned to England in February 1948 and found themselves quartered on a wartime airfield at Oadby, Leicester.
The 8th Hussars moved to Mooltan Barracks, Tidworth in April 1950, but storm clouds were building up in the Far East and their stay was not for long.
