The 3rd King’s Own Hussars were the first cavalry regiment mechanised under the big three-year plan announced by the War Office.

In the image above the 3rd Hussars are shown on parade at Tidworth with their camouflaged steel steeds. The latter differ considerably from ordinary armoured cars negotiating rough country at great speed.

The Regiment would convert one Troop in 1935 and the full Regiment would be fully mechanised by early 1936.

The Morris CS8 light truck was a short-term stopgap till more armoured vehicles could be produced for the Cavalry regiments converting.

In 1937, the regiment moved to Aldershot, where it served as the reconnaissance unit of the 2nd Infantry Division.

In 1938 the 3rd Hussars would be re-equipped with the Vickers MkVI light tank.
