On the outbreak of the First World War, the 4th Hussars were stationed at the Curragh in Ireland.
The lead elements of the Regiment would depart for France on the 15th of August 1914 from the docks in Dublin and arrive in France on the 19th of August 1914, forming part of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF), the Old Contemptibles.



The Regiment would not return to Britain until 1919.
