This NCO has been continually in action in the period 12 June 42 to Oct 42 and has consistently shown exceptional gallantry and devotion to duty in hazardous and critical altercations.

A noteworthy example was seen on 2 Jun 42 on REWEISAT Ridge when he was in action against enemy tanks. On this occasion, when his troops leader’s tank was hit and set on fire, Cpl Knowles immediately went to his assistance.

Under heavy shell fire he succeeded in extricating his wounded troop leader and the reminded of the crew, although he was severely burnt on the hands and arms while doing so.

By his entire disregard of personal danger and his courage and resource he saved the lives of his wounded officer and the remained of the crew.
