Captured at KNIGHTSBRIDGE (Battle of Gazala, Western Desert) on 12 Jun 42, Milne was, at the time of the Armistice, at a working camp near VERONA (Camp 148/IX).

When the guards deserted on 9 Sep 43, he left with one companion and had reached CAPESTRANO when he was recaptured on 27 Feb 44. A few days later he was entrained for GERMANY.

In spite of the fact that his boots had been removed, he jumped from the train as it was moving at about 30 mph near AREZZO.

He made his way via NORCIA to POPOLI, meeting British troops on 20 Apr 44.
