For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during an attempt to cross the River Rhonella, near Maresches on 27 Oct 1918.

Hearing that the leading company had crossed a tributary in mistake for the river itself, he took two runners and went forward to reconnoitre the banks.

The far bank was strongly held by enemy machine guns and riflemen, and he and his patrol came under their fire at close range, and he was severely wounded.
