Born 1881, Hooton Roberts, Yorks. John enlisted in the 3rd King’s Own Hussars in September 1900 and saw active service in South Africa from December 1901 to October 1902 (Boer War).

From October 1902 to November 1903, he served in India. At Siaklot in October 1903, he was declared medically unfit for further service and discharged back to the UK in January 1904.

In January 1915, he again enlisted in the British Army and was posted to 176 Company, Army Service Corps and was wounded in an enemy aircraft attack near Boeschepe on the 28th of September 1917 and died the following day.
