John Colbeck joined the Territorial Army in 1930 and was commissioned in November 1939.

He served in the BEF in France as an infantryman and in the Middle East as a Commando where he was taken prisoner in April 1941.
After the war, John joined the 4th Hussars and despite a succession of Staff appointments managed to put in service with the Regiment in the Far East and BAOR.
However, the last 10 years of his life were dogged by ill health.
