Capt GLE Sherlock, 3rd Hussars

Captain Gerard Lourdes Edward Sherlock, 3rd King’s Own Hussars, was killed in action in Togoland on August 25th, 1914.

Captain Sherlock, who was the second son of Mr David Sherlock, D.L., entered the service through the Militia Artillery with which he had been in action in South Africa.

He was gazetted 2nd Lieutenant in the 3rd Hussars in July 1906, and first Lieutenant in December 1908.

He was seconded for special service in Nigeria, and during a short leave last year he entered the Army Flying School at Brooklands, where he qualified in an incredibly short time and obtained his Pilot’s certificate.

Returning to Nigeria he took part in several small expeditions and accompanied the British Force to Togoland, which was a German colony, on the outbreak of hostilities.

Son of David Sherlock, of Rahan Lodge, Tullamore, Ireland. CWGC has the date of death as 25 August 1914.

CWGC lists the middle name as Gerard Loundes Edward, but the obituary lists it as Gerard Lourdes Edward. Commemorated on Zaria Memorial.
