He joined the Queen’s Royal Irish Hussars in 1961, while they were stationed in Hohne.

He served with them in Aden, Malaya and Borneo during the period 1962/64 and continued to serve with the Regiment in Wolfenbüttel, Perham Down, Bovington and for his last six years with the Regiment in Paderborn from 1970 until early 1977 when he took his discharge after 17 years service.

He settled in Widnes and became a stalwart member of The Royal British Legion until illness made him give up in early 1994.

He held the position of branch secretary, and standard bearer and worked on the service committee and on the Poppy Appeal.
