Fred died on 20 June 1991.

He joined the Queen’s Royal Regiment in May 1922 and transferred to the 4th Queen’s Own Hussars in May 1926, joining them in Lucknow.

He moved with the Regiment from Lucknow to Meerut, a journey of 300 miles in 20 days in October 1927 which, we understand, was a welcome break from barrack routine.

He left them in May 1929 to take his release.

For many years he worked in various racing stables at Newmarket and after this worked for several years for ‘Simpsons of Piccadilly’ on the delivery and dispatch side.

Fred often used to visit me at Home Headquarters and tales of years gone by were always most interesting.

He had the honour of being presented to Her Majesty The Queen Mother at the 1989 Field of Remembrance ceremony.
