Charles died on 9 July 1988.

He was posted to the 4th Queen’s Own Hussars on 2 October 1929 and sailed to join them in India on 20 November 1929, joining the Regiment on 14 December 1929.

He returned to the UK with the Regiment in October 1930, resigning his commission in January 1933 and being transferred to the Reserve of Officers.

He was recalled in September 1939 and was employed on Provost duties in France, Palestine and Greece, between January 1940 and November 1941.

He was Mentioned in Despatches whilst in Greece.

From January 1942 until posted in March 1942 to the 60th Training Regiment, he was employed as a Lieutenant Colonel at the RMP Depot.

In October 1942 he was medically discharged.

Charles suffered from a weak back due to a riding injury which was the cause of his early retirement.

After the war, he took up sailing in a big way and was one of the 4 sponsors of the Yacht ‘Sceptre’ which challenged for the America Cup in the late 1950s.
