Lt Col John Middleton, formerly of the 8th K.R.I.Hussars has died aged 70.

Lt Col Middleton was awarded the OBE in 1953, when he was adjutant at the Senior Officers’ School, Earlestone Park, near Devizes, Wiltshire.

He enlisted with the 8th Hussars at Leicester in 1919 and was commissioned from the ranks in July 1933. His further promotions were captain 1939, major 1945, lieutenant-colonel 1947.

During the Second World War, he returned to Britain from North Africa and was posted for duty with Edinburgh University Officer Training Corps. In 1943 he qualified at the staff college and afterwards filled several staff appointments.

In November 1946, he was appointed adjutant at Earlestone Park, where he lived for several years with his wife and son, John.

During his Army career, he served in India, Iraq, Egypt, North Africa and Germany.
