John died on 21 Dec 89.

He joined the 8th Hussars in Wiesbaden in 1928, moving with them in 1929 to Aldershot.

During the mechanisation of the Transport Troop in 1930, John became the first Regimental MT clerk and a very good one he was.

Having acquired his first stripe and 1st Class Certificate of Education, he transferred to the RAPC, where he was soon promoted to Sgt.

On the outbreak of war, he was commissioned in the Corps, and at the end of the war, he retired with the rank of Major.

He kept in touch with his contemporaries of those days and often attended OCA Dinners and Cavalry Memorial Parades, usually with his Brother-in-law, ex SSM Harry Rose.

Fred was a very smart soldier, rather reserved, but a very good mate.
