Henry Hope-Murray died in London on the 28th February 1983 in his eighty-fourth year. He was brought up in Ireland and educated at Rugby.

Maj H.C. Hope-Murray, 8th Hussars

He joined the 8th Hussars in August 1918, shortly after the Regiment returned from Germany and about to spend a further five years abroad.

Henry was very definitely a Regimental soldier and spent almost the whole of his service with the Regiment.

He was a great judge of a horse and a very fine natural horseman. He was a charming companion with a wonderful sense of humour who had a flair for giving people very apt nicknames. Even the greatest of Generals with whom he came in contact were not spared.

To the young soldiers, both officers and other ranks he was a tower of strength with his helpful wisdom and advice.

During his time with the Rhine Army, Henry was in the winning British Show Jumping Team which competed against the Belgian and French Armies.

The Regiment was mechanised in 1936 and shortly afterwards, in 1937, Henry left the Army and retired to live in Ireland where he hunted with the Duhallow in County Cork.

In 1939 he was recalled for service in the War and spent the duration on the Staff.

After the war, he returned to Ireland but eventually moved to London where he was able to see many of his old friends from time to time.
