George died on 20 July 2003, aged 79 years.
He enlisted on 2 July 1942 at Ossett. After training with the 60th Training Regiment RAC he joined the 1st Royal Gloucestershire Hussars in January 1943.
In April 1944 the Regiment was disbanded due to heavy casualties. He, together with many other Royal Gloucestershire Hussars, was posted to The 8th King’s Royal Irish Hussars.
How lucky The 8th Hussars were, they were splendid soldiers and soon became valued members of the Regiment.
George landed in Normandy on 8 June 1944 and took part in the battles of Northwest Europe until finally reaching Berlin. He was promoted to sergeant in November 1946.
He left the Regiment, then in Lingen, to take his discharge on 9 February 1947. Being discharged on 12 May 1947, going in the Reserve until 10 February 1954.
George joined the Regimental Association in May 1994. He married shortly after the war and had two children, Gillian and Philip.
On returning to civilian life he joined the family business in Clay Cross, Derbyshire. He retired late in life at the age of 73. He remarried in September 2000 to Patricia.
