William died on 15 August 1989.

He joined The 3rd King’s Own Hussars in December and was transferred to The 8th King’s Royal Irish Hussars in April 1939, when they were at Mersa Matruh.

He served with the Regiment in the Western Desert. He was at the Sidi Rezegh battles in November 1941 as an LCpl and was awarded the Military Medal for his part in the battle.

He stayed behind at one stage of the battle with Major Vernon-Miller who was badly injured in the leg and whose tank had been destroyed and spent a most extraordinary night with burning tanks and the enemy all about them. They were picked up at noon the next day by a staff car.

In August 1943 he was posted to the 27th Lancers.

He left the Army on medical grounds in November 1944.

He kept in touch with the Regimental Association and was a supportive member.
