He enlisted into the Cavalry of the Line on 17 January 1931 at Chatham.

He was posted to the 8th King’s Royal Irish Hussars in February 1931, who was then stationed at Beaumont Barracks Aldershot.

In October 1982 he took part in the move of the Regiment (with over 400 horses) to Hounslow He sailed with the Regiment to Cairo on 19 December 1933.

He took part in the last mounted parade of the 8th Hussars in Egypt on 11 November 1935.

At the end of June 1936, he moved with the regiment to Palestine, to help suppress the disturbances between the Arabs and the Jews. He carried out various duties including guarding the railway line and the aerodrome at Gaza and searching villages for arms.

He took his discharge in March 1937.

He was recalled to the colours on 1st September 1939 joining the 10th Hussars at Tidworth. He was then posted to No 1 Works Labour Company.

He served with the Royal Scots Greys in 1941, and in March 1942 was posted to the Yorkshire Hussars, who at that time was in Malta. Later the mouth he moved with them to Cyprus, sailed for Syria in January 1943 and later went on to Egypt.

He took his discharge on 11 November 1945.
