Bernard died on 6 May 1995.
He enlisted into the Cavalry of the Line in June 1937, spent 10 months with the 10th Hussars and was posted to the 8th King’s Royal Irish Hussars in December 1938 while they were stationed at Main Barracks, Abbassia, Cairo.
He served in the desert campaign up to December 1943 when he was posted home to the Depot.
Until taking his release in March 1946, he served with 52 Training Regiment and the Armoured Fighting Vehicle School.
On retiring, he became a teacher and for 22 years was the principal of an adult further education centre in Lancashire.
