Derek died on 13 February 1995.
He joined the 7th Queen’s Own Hussars in May 1950, while they were stationed in Lüneburg.
Derek moved with the Regiment to Hong Kong in July 1954, returning to Colchester in the UK in August 1958. He was appointed lance corporal in January 1957.
He took part in the amalgamation with the 3rd King’s Own Hussars on 3 November 1958 at Tidworth and moved with the Regiment to Münster in June 1960.
In 1961 he was posted to the Junior Leaders’ Regiment for three years and then moved to the D and M School.
He left on a medical discharge in May 1966,
