All 3rd Hussars were deeply moved by the death of Tpr Jack Winterbottom, who was killed in a traffic accident on 24th June 1953, whilst the Regiment was training at Rheinsehlen in Northern Germany.

Tpr Winterbottom joined “B” Squadron in February 1953. Although he had been with us for only a short time before his death he very quickly made many friends throughout the Regiment.

By the wish of his parents, his body was taken to England to be buried in his home town of Oldham. His Squadron formed the bearer party which carried the coffin from Hanover Hospital to the train, and one officer and seven other ranks represented the Regiment at the funeral in England. Wreaths representing all ranks of the Regiment were placed on the grave.

He was only 19 years old when he died, and our most sincere sympathy goes to his parents in their sad loss.
