The news of Tpr Butler’s death on December 6th, 1961, from viral pneumonia, was a great shock to the Regiment.

Butler joined the 7th Hussars after recruit training on July 7th, 1958, and served with “A” Squadron for most of his service in Tidworth and Germany.

He had become an experienced M.T. driver and drove his Squadron Leader’s Champ for the whole of the 1961 training season. Shortly before his death he had transferred to 2nd Troop and was showing great promise on a Class I Radio Operator’s course.

He was buried with full military honours at Hanover Military Cemetery on December 12th, 1961. The ceremony was attended by his mother, the Commanding Officer and over fifty members of the Regiment.
