Ken joined the Army in September 1946 and served with the 2 RTR.

He was posted to the 4th Hussars in August 1948 just prior to that Regiment’s departure for Malaya where he saw active service in the Malayan jungle as a Troop Cpl, then Troop Sgt in ‘A’ Squadron.

On the amalgamation, he joined Recce Troop – then followed a tour of duty in Northern Ireland as SSM with the North Irish Horse.

Ken rejoined the Regiment during its stay in Malaysia and Borneo as SSM ‘A’ Sqn, continuing on with them to Wolfenbuttel in 1964 and then Bovington in 1968, during which time he was appointed RQMS.

He did his final tour in Berlin before leaving the Army in August 1975 after long and loyal service to the Regiment.

On his retirement, he took over duties from another former Irish Hussar at Kings College in London, where he remained for eleven years.

His last two years he spent as a traffic warden in Parkstone, Dorset and during this time he became a member of Wool Troop.

Ken affectionately known as ‘Sad Sam’ to many, was the kind of person one was glad to have around, reliable, un-flappable and hardworking with his own brand of dry humour.
