Lord Southampton was appointed to the Colonelcy of the 3rd King’s Own Regiment of Dragoons on the 20th of December 1772 on his promotion to the rank of Major General.
Originally in the 1st Foot Guards, he was subsequently Colonel of both the 4th Dragoons and the 19th Foot.
He was created Lord Southampton in 1780 and died a General in 1797.
He is remembered mostly because his wife presented the silver collar worn by the Kettle-Drummer on parade and by the Orderly Officer in the Mess on Dinner Nights.
