Another Lambert copy, the original by Tilly Kettle is still in the possession of the Severne family.

John Severne was appointed Lieutenant colonel of the 8th Dragoons in 1750 and his zeal for service, his constant attention to all his duties as a commanding Officer and the excellent condition in which he preserved the corps, were rewarded in 1760 with the Colonelcy of the Regiment.

He was promoted to the rank of Major General in 1761, Lieutenant General in 1770 and General in 1782.

He died in 1787 after 71 years as a soldier, of which 37 years were spent in the 8th.
