James Hugonin took command of the 4th Dragoons in 1775 and was the first of the Hugonins’ remarkable family association with the regiment.
He commanded until 1790, his son Francis joined in 1768, commanded from 1794 to 1803 and returned to the regiment as Colonel from 1808 until his death in 1836.
Francis’ son James John was commissioned in 1795 and served with the regiment in Spain as Captain, Major and in command, an appointment which he held until 1821.
Of particular interest in this painting of Lieutenant Colonel James Hugonin is the presence of a negro trumpeter; the 4th Dragoons were in fact one of the last regiments to use them as shown in the picture.
