Robert Laurie, of Maxwelton, served for many years in the 7th Dragoons in which he rose to the rank of Major.
In April 1779 he obtained the Lieutenant-Colonelcy of the 19th Light Dragoons.
In 1782 he was promoted to the rank of Colonel, followed a year later by the rank of Major General.
He became Colonel of The Duke of York’s Own Light Dragoons before attaining the rank of Lieutenant General in 1795.
The following year Sir Robert was given the Colonelcy of The 8th Dragoons which he held until his death in 1804.
