Major General Sir Robert commanded the 8th Hussars between 1807 and 1809.

It was once said of him ‘ a more dazzling career than his, there is not in the whole annals of the Regiment ‘.

His achievements are most notable in India whilst suppressing the Sikh uprisings. Gillespie’s resourcefulness and heroism at Vellore led to the suppression of the mutiny and raised the prestige of the British throughout India.

He was however killed at Kalunga in 1814 leading the main assault.

Four monuments to him by Chantry serve as his memorial in St Paul’s cathedral.
