On Nov 19th, in the BIR BERRANI area, Sgt Russell was engaged in a tank battle with German tanks superior both numerically and in gun power.
His own tank had been hit twice and the gun jammed, so he was drawing out some of the battle. however, from another hit tank some 200 yards away from him and only 300 yards from the enemy he saw three men running.
He drove straight back towards them and with complete disregard of danger and the point blank firing of the enemy tanks, getting out of his own tank he succeeded in pulling out all three men, all of whom were wounded, onto his tank and in taking them out of the battle to safety.
