Throughout the period of operations in the Western Desert Major DS Cripps, by his gallantry and devotion to duty was a constant inspiration to the officers and men under his command.
In particular, in the action in the SIDI AZEIZ area on August 5th, 1940, in rescuing the crew of a broken down tank in the face of heavy fire from enemy tanks all round him he showed complete disregard of danger, and exceptional coolness and gallantry.
