Educated at Stamford School he carried out his general training with the Royal Armoured Corps before being posted to the OCTU at Sandhurst.
He was commissioned into the 8th Hussars in April 1944, joining ‘A’ Squadron prior to the invasion of France in June.
He served as a troop leader during the ensuing campaign.
His tour with the Regiment terminated in February 1948 after he had spent some time in Shaftsbury Hospital.
