After completion of basic training in October 1947, Reg Balch was posted to the 8th KRI Hussars.

At that time the Regimental Band had just finished reforming after the Second World War and it was in the band that Reg spent his army career.

He was a truly outstanding guitar player and became an essential part of the dance band and played the trombone with the military band.

In all things as an NCO he set a very fine example and many younger bandsmen owed much to his teaching ability and understanding.

Reg possessed a great sense of humour and was always very thoroughly involved in all band and regimental activities.

In February 1953 Reg left the army and began a very successful career; first as a petrochemical engineer for an American firm in Australia then as a mining engineer, and finally as a lecturer on Contract Law.
