David Bibby who died on June 26th 1979 while on a visit to England, joined the 4th Hussars in 1911.

His father had commanded the Regiment from 1887 to 1891 and in 1869 he had ridden his horse ‘The Doctor’ to win the first Kadir Cup.

David was the last survivor of the Officers of the 4th Hussars who sailed from Dublin to Le Havre on 18th August 1914. On August 28th he was wounded and taken prisoner.

After his release in 1918, he joined the British Expedition in Russia with Demikin’s Army.

In 1922 he rejoined the Regiment in Muttra and spent the rest of his service with it, retiring as a Major in 1937.

He rejoined the Army at the outbreak of war in 1939 and attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Among other employments, he was Officer Commanding troops in various ships and took part in the North African landings.

After the war, he emigrated to Rhodesia.

Those who served with him will remember David as a genial companion, a good sportsman and a dedicated 4th Hussar.

He will be especially remembered by those who served in ‘A’ Squadron of which he was for many years the much loved Squadron Leader.
