Colonel F G Shewell commanded the 8th Hussars from 1847-56 and led the regiment in the charge of the Light Brigade at Balaklava.

Just before the charge, Colonel Shewell reprimanded some of the men because they were still smoking their pipes.

He complained that they were “disgracing the Regiment by smoking in the presence of the enemy”

However, Colonel Lord Paget who commanded the 4th Light Dragoons at the time defiantly continued smoking, enjoying his cigar before, during and after the charge itself.
