The Battles of The Somme from 21 March to 5 April 1918 marked the last desperate attempt by the Germans to break through the British line protecting the Channel Ports.

The 3rd Hussars were at this stage fighting dismounted and were heavily involved covering the withdrawal of our infantry throughout these battles.

Together with the Oxford Hussars, they distinguished themselves on 1 April in an assault on Rifle Wood: they charged on foot uphill with no artillery support and, despite withering machine-gun fire, forced the Germans out of the wood.
