During afternoon Captain Gatacre was ordered to reconnoitre MONT DES CATS by Bde Gen Gough. Hill held. Captain Gatacre and Lieut Levita killed at short range from monastery” |

2Lt JRM Lonsdale | 29 Oct 14 | Died of wounds | ” … 13 Oct. 6am patrols sent out, one of which drew 24 Germans from METEREN into an ambush, but M.gun jammed. Captured an 8th Jeager. Brigade assembled near NOOTE BOOM and advanced E 5th Lancers were held up on hill 68. Reinforced with A Sqdn. fight develops on our right. Guard left flank against parties of Germans. At 3pm the enemy delivered a counter attack. The Bays on our right and one of our Sqdns were driven in. Lieut Lonsdale being mortally wounded. At 4.30pm our infantry appeared from our right rear, we prolonged their left and Germans ceased to advance. We then counter attacked retreating Germans … “ |

Maj HG Watkin | 21 Aug 15 | Died of wounds | “… In 1915 posted as Brigade Major in the 2nd South Midland Mounted Brigade. This was a unit of predominantly yeomanry cavalry sent to take part in the aftermath of the Sulva Bay landings at Gallipoli. On 21st August, the brigade had been dismounted to reinforce the lines at Sulva Bay as part of the desperate second landing in an attempt in vain to salvage something from the wreckage of the original Gallipoli landings in April. During the battle of Scimitar Hill at Sulva Bay, Henry was wounded and he died of his wounds later the same day.” |

2Lt J Fisher-Smith | 28 Nov 17 | Killed in action | “… BOURLON WOOD 28th Nov. The line taken over ran along the Northern edge of the wood about 200 yds inside it facing the village of BOURLON. The enemy shelled the line during day. At about 1pm he shelled Batln HQ heavily, Lt Fisher Smith, signalling officer was killed by a piece of a shell which hit him in the heart. The whole wood was severely shelled until about 8pm.” |

Lt WD Buddicom MC | 06 Jun 18 | Accident | “… His demise came as a result of an accident while instructing his men on the use of a Lewis gun (machine gun) on a firing range in northern France. The gun had been used to fire at fixed targets but suddenly jammed as a result of the heat generated within the mechanism during its use. It was left to cool down and Lieutenant Buddicom and his men walked forward of the weapon to inspect the results of their firing on the targets at the far end of the range. Whilst in that position the mechanism in the gun, having cooled, sprung back into life and sprayed a series of rounds into the soldiers standing by the targets. A number were injured and Lieutenant Buddicom was killed.” |
