Olof Wijk who died on February 25th 1980, joined the 4th Hussars at Lucknow in October 1925, he was the stepson of Major General Sir Reginald Barnes, who was Colonel of the Regiment from January 1918 to October 1941.

On joining, Squeak as he was always called, was posted to ‘B’ Squadron, then commanded by Captain Scott-Cockburn. A keen young officer, he took part in all sporting activities of the Regiment.

He came back to England with the Regiment in 1930 but left in October 1935 to join Christopher’s, the Wine Merchants of Jermyn Street.

In 1939 he was recalled for service and rejoined at Tidworth, no longer to be mounted on a horse, but to be driven in a tank. He went to the Western Desert with the Regiment and was promoted Captain, thence to Greece, where on the collapse of Allied resistance in that country, he was taken, prisoner.

On demobilization, he returned to Christopher’s with whom he stayed until his retirement. For several years after the last war, he arranged the Annual Officers’ Dinner of the Regiment in London, which he always did extremely well.
