Winston joined the band of 8th KRIH in 1957 and on amalgamation in 1958 left the band for MT Troop and eventually transferred as the NCO in charge of the stables.

Having seen service in the Far East with the Regiment he again returned to the stables in Wolfenbuttle and spent many happy days driving the horsebox and polo ponies all over Germany.

Winston left the Army in 1974 to return to Londonderry where he joined the RUC and remained with them until his retirement in 2002.

For his outstanding work with the RUC and the local community, Winston was awarded the MBE, which he collected at Buckingham Palace in 1995.

Unfortunately, he did not enjoy good health in his retirement and sadly he died on 19 February 2004.
