‘Pop’ joined the Middlesex Regiment in February 1940, the Royal Armoured Corps in 1942, and he was then posted to the 4th Queen’s Own Hussars in 1943.

He served in the Middle East, Italy and BAOR and became a Queen’s Royal Irish Hussar at the amalgamation in 1958.

For many years he drove the Horsebox. In those days this was a risky job, as they were not too reliable and required great care and attention by ‘Pop’ to keep it on the road and reach its destination.

He was eventually discharged in 1971 at the age of 55 with 32 years of service.

‘Pop’ was a grand old Irish Hussar and not long before he died he called in to show me a pile of well-worn photographs of 4th and Irish Hussars going back many years; there were lots of familiar faces.

For a number of years, he was the standard-bearer for the Royal British Legion, West Lulworth.

‘Pop’ was a very proud soldier, who gave long and devoted service to Queen and country.
