Delme Locke of Cheltenham, who died on 23 July 1990, joined the Royal Gloucestershire Hussars in early 1939, he was a popular member of ‘H’ Squadron being humorous, kindly and intelligent but did not suffer fools gladly.

A few years older than many of us, he was soon a Corporal, being an experienced motorcyclist and sports car enthusiast he was naturally connected to transport.

By the time the Regiment sailed for the Middle East he was a Lance Sergeant.

He took part in all the major battles eventually becoming a Tank Commander.

Delme moved with the contingent to the 8th KRI Hussars in January 1943, becoming a member of ‘A’ Squadron as Troop Sergeant.

He served in Egypt and Cyprus until late 1943 when he was called back to OCTU for a commission for which he had applied more in anger than a desire on the disbandment of the RGH.

As a Lieutenant, he went to the 9th Lancers in Italy until activities ceased when he was posted to the staff of a POW Camp in East London.

Early release saw him back on the board of the family baking business.

He was a former Treasurer of the Cheltenham Association and a regular visitor to Irish Hussars’ reunions.
